Welcome

Dear Friend,

Thanks for visiting my website. I sincerely hope that you can join me in moving education forward in Georgia. For too long our state has been the cellar dweller in just about every area of educational measurement, and recent efforts to change this fact have fallen short. All of us want the very best schools possible for Georgia's children and teens, and we know that their futures and the very future of our economy depend on how well we educate them. As a veteran classroom teacher and state legislator, I know that I have the experience and fresh ideas that can lead us out of our educational stagnation.

Our hard working teachers cannot be blamed for Georgia's standing of 46th among the 50 states, but leadership and failed programs can be. The decades I have spent in Georgia classrooms have been a deep pleasure because I loved teaching and enjoyed students, yet too often I yearned for state level leadership that was vibrant and idea-generating, instead of stale and bureaucratic.

We can do better! I invite you to join me today in moving our schools forward. I also invite you to keep returning to this web site as we continue to add new and exciting information.

Roger

About Roger

The son of a Mississippi tenant farmer, and the 16th of 17 children, Roger Hines learned what hard work was all about at an early age. That, coupled with strong Christian parents who taught their children right from wrong and who valued learning, molded Roger into a true conservative thinker at a very early age. The first paperback book he ever read was The Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater.

Roger was a product of the public school system in Mississippi where he lettered in basketball his last two years. Throughout his college years, Roger exhibited his leadership skills in various roles on campus, including serving simultaneously as the president of the Student National Education Association and the Baptist Student Union. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in English from Southern Mississippi.

In the summer between his junior and senior years at Southern Miss, Roger met the girl who would become his wife of 42 years (and still counting). Roger and Nancy have four children... Christi, Wendy, Jeff and Reagan... and seven grandchildren.

Right after college, Roger's teaching career started in the Meridian, MS public schools, but because of the higher pay scale for teachers in Georgia at the time, he moved his young family to Cobb County Georgia in 1971 where he began teaching at Wheeler High School. His teaching career in Georgia has carried him from Wheeler to North Cobb High School and Oakwood High School (an open campus school). He has also taught at Kennesaw State University, Reinhardt College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Chattahoochee Technical College and two years on the Governor's Honors Program faculty... a total of 42 years of teaching experience.

Roger's life journey as an adult to become Georgia's next State School Superintendent is filled with proof of his leadership abilities and a servant's heart to which literally thousands of former students can attest. These include:

  • Distinct honor of Teacher of the Year at Wheeler High School, North Cobb High School, Cobb County School District and a top five finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year
  • Chairman of Deacons of Roswell Street Baptist Church and a Bible teacher at Keystone Baptist Church in West Cobb County, GA
  • Member of the Board of Directors of North Metro Fellowship of Christian Athletes
  • Member of the Advisory Board of Oakwood High School, an open campus school
  • Founding member of Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE)
  • Member of the Board of Directors of PAGE and Editor of PAGE ONE, Page's publication
  • 2-term Georgia State Representative and member of the House Education Committee
  • Chairman of Georgia Professional Practices Commission (now a part of the Professional Standards Commission)
  • Author of Writing Across the Curriculum: A Handbook for Teachers

To best sum up Roger's life and qualifications to become Georgia's next State School Superintendent, Kathy, a former student of Roger's from Wheeler High School says, "Roger Hines has a love and passion for education unmatched by anyone I have ever known. He really cares from the bottom of his heart that students learn and are prepared to meet the challenges of adulthood."
